DON'T STOP NOW!
“Do not be foolish, but understand
what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that
is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:17-18
When you were a kid did you ever sit in your parent’s car and pretend like you were driving? Yeah, me too. Did you make that noise with your lips and turned the steering wheel back and forth imagining yourself tooling down the road? Did you dream of the day when there would be a key in the ignition and off you’d go? Such freedom! Here’s some sad news. That’s the way a lot of Christians live their spiritual lives. They’re in the car, wanting to go somewhere, but there’s no key in the ignition, no power at their disposal, just a lot of pretending. Living for Christ can become pretty mechanical—a lot of work; not a lot of joy. Sadly we can become content sitting in the driveway and dreaming what could be. But that’s not what God has planned for you. As His child, did you know that you’ve been given the power of the Holy Spirit to turn over the engine and get moving in your spiritual life? The question now is, have you given the Spirit the keys? If you wonder what I mean by that, engage in the series that’s on the air right now, Pour It on Me Now which is all about the practicalities of Ephesians 5:18, “be filled with the Spirit .” The word “filled” means, “to be overcome by a power greater than your own.” When the Holy Spirit fills you, He takes control of your tongue and you say things that encourages and builds up God’s people. When He fills your mind, you think thoughts that please Him and you are nourished by the truth of His Word in a way that really feeds you. When the Holy Spirit truly fills you, you don’t have to be afraid or depressed or discouraged anymore. Every good thing God wants to do in your life comes through His Spirit—the fruit of the Spirit, understanding of God’s Word, love of worship, strength in a trial, grace to forgive, compassion for the lost, comfort in heartache, boldness in witnessing, all of this is yours when God’s Spirit has the freedom to control your life at every level. Do you want the fullness of God’s Spirit? Then ask Him to fill you. I do this every morning before my feet hit the floor. Decide in your waking moments that you want to yield to His control that day. Once you’ve been out on the open road with God’s Spirit behind the wheel of your life you’ll never again be content just sitting in the driveway. |
