WHERE'S THE POWER?

So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:12-17

Do you ever get out of bed in the morning and say, “Today, it’s gonna be different. Today, I’m going to live like a Christian. I’m going to do it right.” With ambitions of performing like an all-star Christian, you begin your day. But before you’re even out of the driveway your attitude or actions have come crashing down. You’ve figured out what Romans 8:13 is talking about, “ those who live by the flesh fail. ”

Aren’t you tired of being the same person that you always are and struggling with this same stuff that you always do? There comes a point when we finally are ready to say, Help, God! I can’t do this Christian life in my own strength.

That’s a really freeing place to be. The reality is that God never expected you could. What we’re learning on the broadcast this week in the Pour It on Me Now series is that He has made no provision for you to live the Christian life on your own. No provision—as in nada , zilch, big Cheerio, none. If you know what it’s like to extend all your human energy to live for God, then you know what it is to fail. We can’t come to Christ on our own; we can’t live for Christ on our own. He never said we could.

Ready for the good news? God has given you His Spirit to live the Christian life through you . That’s a really important statement. Let’s hit it again: God has given you His Spirit to live the Christian life through you.

Living the Christian life in the power of His Spirit means getting out of the way. It’s laying yourself down and saying, “Lord, not my will, not in my strength, not my way—but Yours !” Grace flows to the person who says that!

Romans 8:10-11 says that if you live according to the flesh (in your own strength), you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body (those old dumb ways of living), you will live. There’s major freedom coming your way if you let Almighty God flow His Spirit through your life. Read Romans 8 for a bigger picture of this new way of living.

Start your day with God and you’ll start it in victory.
