TO KNOW CHRIST
| TO KNOW CHRIST By Dr. James MacDonald You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. John 5:39-43 If you know me at all, you know that I’m all about the Bible. Nothing is more precious to me than the Word of God— except the Son of God . I’m fired up about the Bible because it leads us to the Person of Christ. We study the Word of God, not to become some Bible fat-head, but to learn about and draw near to Jesus Christ. That was the Pharisee’s problem. They were just about the Book, but not about the Lord who wrote it. Jesus said to them, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life.” But, “It is these that speak of Me. Yet you refuse to come to Me that you may have life.” (John 5:39) It’s like He was saying, Hello! I’m right here!! Tragically, the Pharisees were “always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7), even when the Truth personified stood right in front of them. Embracing the written Word, they rejected the Word incarnate. So why do you read the Bible? Why are you engaged in Bible studies? Why do you take notes during the sermon? The way to grow spiritually is not to attend every seminar you possibly can or build a library in your head of spiritual information. Ultimately, that’s not helping you at all. I’ve met people who could win big bucks on Jeopardy! if the categories were all about the Bible, but don’t download their knowledge into experience. They can’t stand up in the face of temptation because they haven’t been living what they’re learning. The truth has never traveled the eighteen inches from their head to their heart. Hey, no more ‘study more, learn more, try harder’ goals. Let the Word call you back to the fountain of your spiritual life, which is Jesus. “That we may know Him” is our goal (Phil 3:10). You don’t need to pursue Bible information, you don’t need to chase after change. The Bible is the written Word of God which guides us to the Living Word of God.
