ALWAYS A BRIDE, NEVER A BRIDESMAID

“Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” (Revelation 21:9 NKJV)

Isn’t it interesting how the Bible describes God’s church? Of all the different ways that He could have described His relationship with us, He chose to use the bride-groom relationship. I believe that this is done deliberately so we can make a personal connection with an eternal reality.

Think of how a groom looks at his bride as she walks down the aisle to him. He can’t take his eyes off of her! Every thought in his mind and every emotion in his heart are pointed in her direction. Time seems suspended, everyone else fades into the background, and the worries of this world melt in this matchless moment. It’s in this instant that Jesus’ heart for His church is revealed. He calls us His bride because a groom’s love for his bride is the closest parallel in this world to His love for us. Just imagine . . . Jesus can’t take His eyes off of you! His thoughts are continually aimed at you, and they are more numerous than the sand on all the shorelines of the world (Psalm 139:18)!

Now think of how a groom takes care of his bride as they walk down the aisle together. He has made all of the necessary arrangements for the reception and the honeymoon. Every effort has been put into covering every detail. Is there any chance that he will leave the bride behind? Of course not, because his greatest joy is having her next to him. Why then do we so often doubt Jesus’ provision and protection in our lives? All it takes is for one of life’s storms to hit and we’re crying out, “Lord, don’t you care?” This is because we’re not looking at ourselves the way He does, as a bride to be cherished and defended to the point of death.

In life, circumstances and seasons will change. But one thing that never changes is the fact that Christ adores us with the peerless passion of a bridegroom. Remember this when the temptation arises to question His love.
