GREAT . . . MIGHTY . . . AWESOME
| The church is great, it is mighty, and it is awesome! This isn’t my fickle bias; it is my firm belief. I can this with such confidence because the church is a reflection of its founder—God. And in the following verse, Moses proclaims God to be great, mighty, and awesome: “For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17 NKJV) The word used here for “great” carries the meaning of eldest and highest. It speaks of an authority that is like no other. We all have a certain measure of authority. For example, our key ring is a reflection of the authority we have when it comes to our home, car, and place of employment. As a general rule, we understand that the more keys people have, the more authority they have. But when it comes to spiritual matters, the church’s authority is unmatched because its authority comes directly from God (Matthew 16:19). The word for “mighty” projects a sense of power and strength. Not long ago, I was driving my son, Christian, and one of his buddies to an outing. We were going to be joined by some friends and family members, including my brother-in-law, Jerry. With a boy’s wide-eyed wonder, Christian described to his buddy how big Jerry’s biceps were. Christian recognized the merit in might, and the church would do well to remember that we are constantly backed and braced by God’s almighty muscles (Deuteronomy 33:27). The word “awesome” speaks of something that’s absolutely admirable. We admire those who demonstrate the qualities of goodness and justice. In all of His eternal existence, God has never done a single thing that hasn’t been good and just. He is worthy of our admiration for all that He has done, does, or will do (Revelation 15:3). The church should reflect the character of God: great—because we are an extension of His authority; mighty—because we have access to His ability; and awesome—because we emulate His admirableness.
