FOUND A FOUNDATION?

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:11 NKJV)

The strength of a building always depends on its foundation. When it comes to a skyscraper, any architect will tell you that its stability, substance, and structure are all determined by the foundation that supports it. It doesn't matter how high or imposing it may appear; it is only as strong as its foundation.

God's Word compares the church to a building (1 Peter 2:5), which leads me to ask, "What about its foundation?" Many believe that the church is built upon Peter. But in 1 Peter 5:1, Peter himself proclaims that he is a fellow elder in the church, not the foundation that many have made him out to be. Some would say that the church is all part of a man-made program of morality. Morals play an important part in the church, but they aren't the foundation. Then there are skeptics who accuse the church of being built on nothing more than propaganda.

The truth is that the church's foundation is none other than the person of Jesus Christ. If the strength of a building lies in the strength of its foundation, then what does this mean for the church, which has been built on the Rock of Ages? For one thing, it means that it cannot fall. The church has been besieged, beaten, and battered, but at the end of time, it will still stand because Christ, who is all-powerful, is supporting it (Colossians 1:16). It also means that there are no limits to how high the church can ascend. In accomplishing the work of God, the sky is literally the limit because heaven is holding us up.

It's so important for us to remember these truths. For as we encounter the challenges of life, we know that in Jesus we have a foundation that can never be moved, and neither can we.

". . . and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock." (Matthew 7:25 NKJV)
