Wisdom

One of the specific ways that God enables us to be like Him is through the gift known as the word of wisdom.

Somebody once defined wisdom as "the inspired ability to say or do the right thing at the right time in the right way." That is a good description of the way this gift works. The word of wisdom is like getting a divine download on how to handle a problem or crisis.

We see this gift in operation during the reign of Solomon. In a classic case of "one word against the other," two women claimed ownership of an infant. The situation seemed hopeless to the natural mind, but Solomon was given the word of wisdom and decreed that the baby be cut in two and each woman be given a half. The true mother sacrificed her half in order to see the child spared. Her love for her baby identified her as the real mother, and the people recognized that God's wisdom was in Solomon (1 Kings 3:16-28).

The word of wisdom was also demonstrated in the early church. As the body of believers grew, it became impossible for the apostles to keep up with the practical demands while maintaining spiritual contact with the Lord. Once again, the word of wisdom was at work as they determined to raise up another set of servants who could tend to the more practical demands of the ministry while the apostles gave themselves over to prayer and the ministry of God's Word. Needs were met more effectively, servants were trained, and the church continued to grow (Acts 6:1-7).

When we get God's wisdom, we also get to be more like Him. Through the word of wisdom, we better understand His heart and His solution for resolution in times of need. Given the great needs that exist in our lives, may the Lord fill us with this gift and may we grow in godliness through its use.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5 NKJV)

When have you personally seen the word of wisdom at work?

What are some other examples of the word of wisdom in Scripture? (Hint: life of Christ)
