Rooted in Reality
Rooted in Reality
These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him . . . A heart that devises wicked plans . . . . (Proverbs 6:16-18 NKJV) God hates a heart that devises wicked plans,or, as the King James Version of the Bible puts it, wicked imaginations. In light of this, it would be wise to take a moment and ask yourself what you do with your imagination. Do you use it to fantasize about being someone else? Do you constantly daydream about being with someone else? Or do you dwell in a fictional fantasy land where everything turns out perfect? If so, then you're bound be bummed by real life because reality never matches up to fantasy. I recently experienced this truth as my wife, Diane, and I went away to a special hotel to celebrate our twenty-first wedding anniversary. I had it all planned out in my mind. I called ahead and made the necessary arrangements. I even paid a little extra so that we could enjoy an early check-in. It was going to be a perfect little getaway. That was my fantasy. In reality, our room wasn't ready for us when we arrived and instead of hearing soft and soothing music as I turned on the sound system, there was an annoying car commercial. Reality never lives up to our fantasies, and if all we do is live for fantasies, we will always be discontented with what we have in life, and many have even turned away from God as a result. The Bible exhorts us to set our minds on what is true: Finally, brethren, whatever things are true . . . meditate on these things. (Philippians 4:8-9 NKJV) This doesn't mean we can't use our imaginations or enjoy a good story now and then. But the point here is that we need to be people who are rooted in reality. We shouldn't hang our hopes and dreams on things that don't exist. So take inventory of your thought-life and ask God to reveal if your imagination has been wicked or wayward in any way.
